How do you balance responsible antimicrobial use in practice together with client finances and expectations? This lecture will give an overview regarding appropriate antimicrobials as well as practical considerations such as route and timing of administration.

• Recognise the difference between concentration and time dependent antimicrobials and how this affects their clinical considerations.
• Understand how sampling technique of culture and susceptibility may affect bacteriology results and how preliminary results can guide your empirical treatment.
• Understanding what is meant by intrinsic resistance and how knowing the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) may aid suitable treatment protocols in resistant isolates.
